Sperm donors may be selected on the grounds of looks, personality, academic ability, race, and many other factors.
It is increasingly popular among unmarried women, single and coupled lesbian and married women whose husbands suffer male infertility problems.

However, Have you ever imagined how the society around you would look like if there were kids born of one sperm donor?

The children would
1.probably look alike,
2.probably attend the same school(s) in the area,
3.probably end up going on a date together. An accidental incest between half brothers and sisters.
But more over it rises concern in some experts in genetics. There could be a possibility that genes for rare diseases could be spread more widely.

Although other countries, including Britain, France and Sweden, limit how many children a sperm donor can father, there is no such limit in the United States.

HIV among gays in the US

WASHINGTON: One in five sexually active homosexual men in the US has HIV, and almost half of those who carry the virus do not know they are infected, a study has found.

The findings were published this week to precede US National Gay Men's HIV Awareness Day on Monday.

''This study's message is clear: HIV exacts a devastating toll on men who have sex with men in America's major cities, and yet far too many of those who are infected don't know it,'' said Kevin Fenton, director of the centres' National Centre for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention.

In the earlier study, 46 per cent of gay black men tested positive, compared with 40 per cent in the more recent study, Hispanics represented 18 per cent of the infected compared with 23 per cent in the more recent study and White men comprised 21 per cent of the infected in 2004-05 and 20 per cent in 2008.

House cleaner awarded 400,000 pounds house

A hard-working cleaner has been rewarded with a 400,000 pound ($687,500) house and car after her employers became Britain's biggest lottery winners.

Nigel Page and Justine Laycock won 56 million pounds in the Euromillions jackpot earlier this month and decided they wanted to thank their cleaner Denise Kelso for her work.

They handed her the keys to their four-bedroom home, which she had kept clean for years, and Justine's black Honda Civic in gratitude for her years of service.

The couple have moved into a new 4 million pound home in England's West Country, where Kelso will continue working for the couple.

"All you need to know is I love my cleaner very much," Justine told the Sunday Mirror.

Kelso said she and her husband were "taking care" of Justine and Nigel's former home.

"It's still their house and car, but we are living here," she said.

"They've only just won, so I'm sure they're still trying to decide what they want to do."

Switzerland’s troubling record of suicide

Here is one record the Swiss may not be so enthusiastic about holding: more suicides are committed here using guns per capita than anywhere else in Europe.
The issues of gun suicide and Switzerland’s high rate of weapon ownership came under the spotlight again in January. The police chief overseeing security at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos turned his service revolver against himself a day before the event began.

His case is hardly unique. From 1996 to 2005, 3,410 suicides, or between 24 and 28 per cent of all those in Switzerland, were committed using firearms.

That percentage trails the United States, it is true, where 57 per cent of suicides involve a gun. But few European countries come anywhere near Switzerland.

And of other English-speaking countries, the highest rate is in Canada, where 19 per cent of suicides were by firearm in 2000. In England and Wales the figure stands at 2.8 per cent, and in Scotland at 1.8 per cent.

Guns are highly efficient: experts say that 90 per cent of suicide attempts involving firearms are successful.

PARIS (Reuters) - French police are investigating whether a pickpocket stole thousands of euros from passengers as they slept on an Air France flight from Tokyo to Paris.

"There is an investigation under way," a spokesman for the border police at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris said when asked to confirm a report on the website of the Le Figaro.

The paper said around 4,000 euros ($5,744) appeared to have been stolen from five business class passengers as they slept on the overnight flight.

"On this flight, which takes off from Tokyo Narita at 10 p.m., passengers often sleep deeply before waking up shortly before arriving in Paris at around 4 a.m.," Le Figaro quoted one of the alleged victims as saying.

A woman alerted the cabin crew when she woke to find a large sum missing, the passenger said.

"This lady called staff to say that all the cash in her handbag had been stolen. Counting Swiss francs, euros and yen, there was apparently about 3,000 euros," the passenger said.

A spokeswoman for Air France said the pilot had alerted police who were waiting when the flight touched down.

"I would say that it is really extremely rare to have several passengers at once reporting thefts on board," she said.

She said that while the company was responsible for baggage carried in the hold, passengers had responsibility for possessions they had with them in the cabin.

Mobile phone security at risk

Billions of mobile phone users around the world are at risk of having their calls intercepted and recorded after hackers broke the encryption used to protect 80 per cent of the world's mobiles.

People regularly trading in confidential information, such as Government officials and executives, would be the most likely eavesdropping targets but virtually anyone with enough skills and determination could harness the research for nefarious means, security experts warn.

German computer engineer Karsten Nohl told a hacker conference in Berlin that he and his team decoded the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) encryption algorithm to draw attention to gaping security holes in the technology and drive mobile operators to patch them.

About 80 per cent - or 3.5 billion - of the world's mobiles are based on GSM, which is over 20 years old.

In Australia, virtually every mobile phone uses GSM or a variation of it after Telstra shut down its ageing CDMA network, Telsyte research director Warren Chaisatien said.

Nohl, who has published the secret GSM encryption code online, told the Chaos Communication Congress this week that a skilled eavesdropper using basic equipment and free software could be recording phone calls within 15 minutes, The Guardian reported.

"This shows that existing GSM security is inadequate," Nohl, 28, said, insisting his work was purely academic.

“We are trying to push operators to adopt better security measures for mobile phone calls.”

Security experts including mobile encryption firm Cellcrypt said it would be largely skilled hackers and well-funded criminals who would have access to the technology and expertise required to intercept calls..

However, Cellcrypt's Ian Meakin told the BBC that Nohl's work was still a "massive worry".

"It lowers the bar for people and organisations to crack GSM calls. It inadvertently puts these tools and techniques in the hands of criminals," Meakin said.

The GSM Association, which devised the algorithm, said Nohl's work was illegal and admitted intercepting calls using his method was "theoretically possible but practically unlikely". It said it was taking the security threat very seriously.

Nohl claims he consulted lawyers before publishing his findings and insists he is operating within the law. But he conceded the data he produced could be used for illegitimate purposes, such as to create a phone tapping device.

"What he is doing would be illegal in Britain and the United States. To do this while supposedly being concerned about privacy is beyond me," GSM association spokeswoman Claire Cranton told The New York Times.

Nohl is developing a solid reputation in the hacker community after a similar campaign last year that led to an update to the security protecting millions of cordless home phones.

Several hacker groups had earlier signalled their intentions to crack the GSM algorithm, which protects calls by scrambling the communications link between the radio base station and handset.

Serious security flaws in the technology were discovered and exposed as early as 1994.

A newer, more secure version of the algorithm has been developed by the GSM Association but it has not yet been implemented by most mobile mobile network operators around the world.

Three dear while six injured in a Highway accident

TWO children are dead, and their parents severely burned, after a fuel tanker collided with three cars yesterday afternoon and rolled over an embankment of the Princes Highway near Batemans Bay.

The driver of the diesel tanker also died at the scene.

Two people with 80 per cent burns, believed to be the children's parents, were flown by helicopter to Royal North Shore and Concord hospitals. It is believed the family was from Ulladulla. Another patient, believed to be a woman in her 50s, was taken to Batemans Bay Hospital with spinal injuries and three others with minor injuries were taken to Milton-Ulladulla Hospital.

Family of five hacked to death in China

Police in south-west China have arrested a man suspected of hacking a father and his four children to death, the latest in a string of grisly killings in the nation, state press said.

Deng Xueyun was captured by police in Guizhou province on Saturday, about 17 hours after allegedly murdering his neighbour Deng Zhaoxiang, 40, and his four young children, the Beijing News reported.

The elder Deng was hacked to death outside the door of his home in Lushan village late on Friday, while the two boys and two girls were killed while asleep in bed, it said.

The children were aged between six and 11 years of age, it added.

The report identified the suspect as a neighbour of the victims. It was not immediately clear if they were related.

On December 13, a 34-year-old man allegedly shot and hacked to death 12 family members in a forested area in central China's Hunan province and torched some of their homes.

Earlier this month, police in south-west China captured a man suspected of murdering his parents and four other relatives after he escaped from a mental hospital in Yunnan province.

In late November, police in southern Hainan province captured a man suspected of hacking to death his parents, wife, sons and sister in Beijing.

On November 28, a man suspected of the stabbing murders of six people committed suicide in Inner Mongolia.

Computer crash delays flights in Australia

Atleast a dozen Virgin Blue flights from Melbourne Airport have been cancelled after damage to a Telstra cable blocked the airline's access to its computer systems.

Several flights to Sydney, another in the return direction, and a Canberra-bound flight are among those cancelled. There are also delays up to three hours for passengers able to fly.

Airline spokeswoman Amanda Bolger said the airline was waiting for Telstra to fix a hardware problem affecting Virgin's check-in, flight planning and boarding system in Melbourne.

The team on the ground had no choice but revert to manual check-ins as per Ms Bolger.

In an era of rampant female sexuality it's ironic that women's genitalia remains taboo, writes Marie-Louise Olson.

The vagina. When was the last time you said the "v" word without snickering?

In an age of skin-baring pop stars, rampant internet porn and the sexualisation of young girls, it seems ironic that this innocent little fleshy bit with its nuances of pink and purple is still considered the most taboo area of human anatomy.

Recently on the Sydney radio show I co-host we had a candid discussion about the names we call our love tunnel.

But as terms like "pussy" and "punani" came out of my mouth and straight into the airwaves, I involuntarily found myself turning a shade of pink and purple as well.

Why is it still so hard for women to talk openly about our cho-chos? Diane Kerry, the director of the Australian School of Tantra, says it is because our society is still inhibited by the past.

"It's a refection of where we are. We think we're a really sophisticated society, but as far as sex, we're not," she says.

"It's a real hangover from our grandmothers' Victorian generation."

Perhaps we simply need a sexy, but respectable, name for our front bottom ... anything but va-gi-na.

Names for the vagina, which directly translated from latin means sheath or scabbard, are continuously changing over time, but probably the most universal nicknames for it are pussy, muff, cootch, twat and c.

Australian feminist and scholar Germaine Greer once said that the latter "is one of the few remaining words in the English language with a genuine power to shock".

C is a recognised word and can be found in various English-language dictionaries including our own Macquarie dictionary, where it is defined as "the female genitalia" as well as "a contemptible person".

Kerry likes to use the word "yani", which in tantric means sacred place.

"I take my vagina to the gynaecologist, but I use my yani for my sexual being, my sensuality," she says.

In various indigenous languages it is referred to as "nungle" and "kuckles" (also the name of a Broome-based band).

In French it is called "la chat", "tarte au poile" (hairy tart) and more politely, "le foufoun".

The dubious colloquialism "hokey" is used to describe a loose foofa.

According to the urban dictionary, the term is derived from the song The Hokey-Pokey, meaning you can put your left leg in and shake it all about.

TV show host Oprah Winfrey even has a name for it - the vajayjay.

Then there's foofa, box, pink, cock massager, one car garage, sperm dumpster, hoo-ha, axe wound, lady bits, china, vulva, blossomful of nectar, muffin, toolbox, velvety love folds, pastrami meat flaps, pin cushion, catchers mitt, cuckoos nest, the wound that never heals, bearded clam, beef curtains, tunatown, vertical taco, bajango, catpipe, nozzle trap, bushburger, front wedgie, meat hole, fanunu, pecker wetter, dirty south.

Thirty-two planets have been discovered outside Earth's solar system through the use of a high-precision instrument installed at a Chilean telescope, an international team announced Monday.

The existence of the so-called exoplanets -- planets outside our solar system -- was announced at the European Southern Observatory/Center for Astrophysics, University of Porto conference in Porto, Portugal, according to a statement issued by the observatory.

The announcement was made by a consortium of international researchers, headed by the Geneva Observatory, who built the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, or HARPS. The device can detect slight wobbles of stars as they respond to tugs from exoplanets' gravity. That tactic, known as the radial velocity method, "has been the most prolific method in the search for exoplanets," according to the European Southern Observatory statement.

Plane crash killed none in Ghana

A pilot and his passenger have escaped serious injury after their ditched aircraft flipped over upon impact shortly after take-off.

A 55-year-old pilot and his 64-year-old passenger took off from the Heck Airfield at Norwell, just north of Ghana, yesterday afternoon, 5th December. The plane was approximately 17m off the ground when the pilot identified a significant mechanical malfunction and put the plane down in reeds adjacent to the airfield.

Both Pilot and passenger were rushed to the nearby hospital(Gold coast Hospital) for treatment though they suffered from cuts but were able to walk.

A police spokeswoman said due to the low height the plane was unable to glide in and the nose of the plane dug in causing the plane to flip end over end.

18 year old Venezuelan wins Miss Universe

The Miss Universe 2009 contest held on Sunday night in Nassau, Bahamas led to the Stefania Fernandez, a Venezuelan,to win the title. This title was held by a Venezuelan Dayana Mendoza in 2008.

As Miss Universe, Fernandez will have the use of a New York City apartment for the year of her reign, and will receive living expenses. Other prizes include a two-year scholarship at the New York Film Academy; a vacation for two in the Bahamas; and a wardrobe, including evening wear, swimsuits and jewelry.

The competition involves swimsuit, evening gown and interview phases, which a 12-member panel judged.

Miss Dominican Republic, Ada Aimee De La Cruz, was named first runner-up and would assume Fernandez's duties if she couldn't complete her term.

The order comes after several days of ethnic violence between Uighur Muslims and Han Chinese. At least 156 people have been killed so far.

The Chinese authorities have vowed to administer "severe punishment" to those involved in the riots.

Many mosques have been closed since the fighting broke out on Sunday.
"For the sake of public safety, all of the mosques have told people that there will be no Friday prayers and that people should stay at home today and pray,"

Tursun a muslim in the Urumqi said that "The government is afraid that people will use religion to support the three forces,"

Injuries in Qantas incident

Seven people were injured aboard a Qantas flight from Hong Kong, China, to Perth, Australia, after the jetliner hit turbulence over Borneo in Malaysia overnight the flight has 206 passengers and 13 flight and cabin crew onboard according to reports from Qantas

Six passengers and a crew member sustained minor injuries and were treated onboard, the Airbus A330-300.

According to Qantas, the turbulence arose four hours into the flight, and the jet landed at Perth around 7:30 a.m. local time Monday (11:30 p.m. GMT Sunday)

The captain reported minor damage to two overhead panels in the cabin and the dislodgement of two oxygen masks, Qantas said.

Last year, an A330-303 was forced to make an emergency landing in Australia after a sudden change in altitude injured 74 passengers. Qantas Flight 72 was flying from Singapore to the western Australian city of Perth when a sudden change of altitude caused abrasions, contusions, fractures and other injuries. The cause of the sudden drop remains under investigation

Gabon’s President Omar Bongo — Africa’s longest-serving ruler — has died after a battle with cancer, the country’s official news agency reported Sunday. He was 73.

Bongo took power in 1967, seven years after the West African country’s independence from France. He had been receiving treatment for intestinal cancer at the Quiron clinic in Barcelona, Spain, the state news agency GNA reported.

Bongo imposed one-party rule a year after succeeding the country’s first president, who died in office. He allowed multiparty elections after a new constitution in 1991, but his party has retained control of the government since then.

Expecting moms can determine whether they're carrying a boy or a girl as early as 10 weeks after conception, according to an over-the-counter gender prediction test by a Plano, Texas, company.

IntelliGender, the creator of the "Boy or Girl Gender Prediction Test," say scientists isolated certain hormones that when combined with a "proprietary mix of chemicals" react differently if a woman is carrying a boy or a girl.

It claims that within 10 minutes of taking the urine test, a woman will be able to tell her baby's gender. The specimen will turn green if it's a boy, and orange if it's a girl.

IntelliGender would not say what hormones or chemicals it uses it in its test because of a pending patent.

"Most parents have a great degree of curiosity to find out if they're having a boy or a girl, and it can be so excruciating to wait until the 20-week sonogram to find out," IntelliGender co-founder Rebecca Griffin said. "But the test was never meant to be a diagnostic tool. We don't claim 100 percent accuracy."

A robotic sub called Nereus has reached the deepest-known part of the ocean in search of the black box.

The dive to 10,902m (6.8 miles) took place on 31 May, at the Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench, located in the western Pacific Ocean.

Finland charges Rwandan suspect

Finland has charged a former preacher at a Baptist church in Rwanda with genocide for his alleged role in the killings in the African nation in 1994.

Francois Bazaramba has been held in detention in Finland for more than two years after seeking asylum in 2003.

Air France with 228 people missing!

An Air France plane carrying 228 people from Brazil to France has
disappeared from radar screens over the Atlantic.

Paris Charles de Gaulle airport said contact was lost with the flight
from Rio de Janeiro at 0600 GMT.

Brazil's air force confirmed the plane was missing and said a search
and rescue mission was under way near the island of Fernando de
Noronha.

An airport official told AFP the Airbus 330-200 had been expected to
arrive in Paris at 1110 local time (0910 GMT).

Another official said it was possible that the plane had a transponder
problem but this was very rare.

"We are very worried," he said, quoted by AFP news agency. "The plane
disappeared from the screens several hours ago."

Flight AF 447 left Rio at 1900 local time (2200 GMT) on Sunday. It had
216 passengers and 12 crew on board, including three pilots.

Israeli anti-terror forces killed a suspected West Bank Hamas military leader Thursday, the country's military announced.

Abed El Majid Dodeen, 45, was shot dead in a joint operation by the Israeli Army and a police anti-terror unit, the army said. A local journalist in the region confirmed to CNN Dodeen had been killed.

The killing came hours before U.S. President Barack Obama was scheduled to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Washington. It will be their first meeting since Obama became president, and follows a visit to Washington two weeks ago by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel accused Dodeen of involvement in attacks including suicide bombings on buses in Jerusalem and Ramat Gan. Four people were killed in the Jerusalem attack, and six died in the Ramat Gan bombing.

Tourist bus crashes into crowd in Bulgaria

Fifteen people were killed and four others seriously hurt when a tourist bus crashed into a crowd in eastern Bulgaria today.

The crash happened about 2:30 a.m. ET near the town of Jambol, according to preliminary information from the ministry.

A 60-year-old local man was driving the bus when it crashed into a crowd that had gathered for a folklore meeting on a mountain road, a ministry press officer said.

Of the 15 casualties, 10 were women and five were men, the spokesman said. None was thought to have been on the bus.

Four people suffered life-threatening injuries and were being treated at a hospital, the spokesman said.

No children or foreigners were among the dead or injured, the Bulgarian Embassy in London said.

Bulgaria's prime minister and interior minister were on their way to the crash site, the embassy said, and the government declared a national day of mourning on Friday.

Austrian Sikh temple attacked

An outbreak of violence between rival Sikhs at an Indian temple lead to the death of a guru and left sixteen people wounded in Vienna, Austria.

Six people were arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred about 1:20 p.m. local time (7:20 a.m. ET) Sunday in Vienna's 15th district, police spokesman S.Hofar.

One armed suspect fired at two gurus, and five other knife-wielding suspects attacked congregants during prayer.
One of the gurus, a 57-year-old Sikh preacher, was killed.

About 150 people were in the room when the violence took place and authorities are now investigating on what triggered the attacks.

Former South Korean President commits suicide

Former South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun aged 62, committed suicide Saturday by leaping to his death from a hill behind his house, the South Korean government announced.

Roh, who was president from 2003 to 2008, had gone hiking near his home with an aide around 6:30 a.m. Saturday (5:30 p.m. ET Friday), the state-run Yonhap news agency said. He was found later with head injuries, and died at 9:30 a.m. after being taken to a hospital in Busan, police said. A hospital spokesman declined to comment.

Roh's former chief of staff, currently acting as the family's lawyer, told CNN Roh left a suicide note for his family.

The canoeing safari enables visitors to have a closer and natural look at hippos and bird life not easily seen on ordinary game safaris.
In 1995, Arusha National Park hosted only 7,000 visitors with the number shooting up to 56,131 during 2006/7.

Lying between the peaks of Kilimanjaro and Meru, Arusha National Park is an outstandingly beautiful area with wide range of habitats, form a string of crater lakes where many water birds can be watched through the highland mountain forest to the imposing summit of Mount Meru.

CRDB bank make massive net profits

The CRDB Bank has posted 39.134bn/- net profit from its operations last year, the bank has announced in a statement. The bank's financial results reflect an increase in the net profit compared to 37.325bn/- recorded for the year ended December 31, 2007.

In the statement published pursuant to the Banking and Financial Institutions Act (BFIA) on mandatory disclosure, CRDB Bank recorded increased customer deposits that reached 1.27trillion/-, as at December 31, up from 1.11trillion/- at the end of the preceding quarter.

The bank's total assets also rose to 1.449trillion/-, up from 1.304trillion/- recodered as at September 30, last year. The assets reflected the rise in its loans and advances portfolio, which reached 836.8bn/-, up from 793.54bn/- that was pencilled at the end of the preceding quarter.

CRDB Bank Plc is one of the country's top private commercial banks, established in July 1996, to succeed the former Co-operative and Rural Development Bank (CRDB), which was wholly owned by government. The bank is now owned by over 11,000 shareholders under the following major groups - individuals (37 per cent), co-operatives (14 per cent), companies (10.2 per cent), DANIDA investment fund 30 per cent) and parastatals (8.8 per cent). The bank is in the process of listing some of its shares on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE).

The collapse of a major polar ice sheet will not raise global sea levels as much as previous projections suggest, a team of scientists has calculated.

Writing in Science, the researchers said that the demise of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) would result in a sea level rise of 3.3m (10 ft).

Previous estimates had forecast a rise in the region of five to six metres.

However, they added, the rise would still pose a serious threat to major coastal cities, such as New York.

"Sea level rise is considered to be the one of the most serious consequence of climate change," lead author Jonathan Bamber told the Science podcast.

"A sea level rise of just 1.5m would displace 17 million people in Bangladesh alone," he added.

"So it is of the utmost importance to understand the potential threats to coastlines and people living in coastal areas."

Sony's first loss

The Sony Corp. announced net losses of $1 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, ending a year in the red for the first time in 14 years.

The company announced plans to reduce plants worldwide to 49 from 57, including four factories in Japan.

The factory closures are in addition to 8000 job cuts previously announced.

The loss comes just months after Sony Chairman and CEO Howard Stringer took over as company president to take its troubled electronic products division directly under his wing. Sony, once the iconic maker of the Walkman, has seen it lose ground to popular devices such as Apple's iPod.

Still, Sony's year-end losses were less than many analysts had predicted.

Japanese firms have been hit hard by the credit crisis. Although few banks were directly affected by collateralized debt or other "toxic assets" that have crippled Wall Street and U.S. corporations, Japan is highly dependent on exports to markets that are most affected by the crisis.

The International Monetary Fund predicts the Japanese economy will shrink by 6.8 percent this year, the largest of developed economies.

Nazi suspect returns to Germany

Germany's Jewish community Tuesday welcomed the deportation from the U.S. of a Nazi war crimes suspect who is charged with being an accessory to the murder of about 29,000 civilians at a death camp.

Charlotte Knobloch, president of the Central Council of Jews, said the arrival of John Demjanjuk was a warning to other World War II-era criminals.

Demjanjuk was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital after landing at Munich airport. An ambulance was also used to take the 89-year-old to a plane at airport in Cleveland, Ohio on Monday evening.

Demjanjuk, a native Ukranian who has long claimed he was a prisoner of war rather than a death camp guard, is wanted in Germany for his alleged role in the murder of about 29,000 civilians at Sobibor, a Nazi death camp in Poland.

"All the living Nazi war criminals should know that there can be no mercy for them, regardless of their age," Knobloch said in a statement.

"They must be held accountable for their inhumane actions. Because there is no statute of limitations for crimes against humanity."

Demjanjuk's deportation closes a chapter in one of the longest-running pursuits of an alleged Holocaust perpetrator in history. It also sets the stage for what may prove to be an extraordinary German war crimes trial.

The U.S. Supreme Court last Thursday denied a stay of deportation for Demjanjuk. Justice John Paul Stevens without comment refused to intervene in the planned transfer from the United States.

Federal courts rejected his appeals, and the order from Stevens cleared the way for the Justice Department to move ahead with the deportation.

Demjanjuk's lawyers had asked the high court to consider their claims that he was too ill and frail to be sent overseas. They also raised human rights and other legal issues in their last-minute appeal.

A German court last Wednesday had also ruled against a request for a stay. Officials in Berlin have issued an arrest warrant charging Demjanjuk with being an accessory to the murders of about 29,000 civilians at Sobibor in 1943.

U.S. immigration officers previously entered Demjanjuk's Cleveland-area home on April 14, and carried him out in his wheelchair to a waiting van. He was held for a few hours and then returned to his residence after a federal appeals court ruled temporarily in his favor.

VIOLENCE against women and girls is increasingly becoming a social problem in Zanzibar with most such cases, however, ending up unreported to relevant authorities. While police records indicate that cases of violated women have been fluctuating in the last three years, human rights and gender activists maintain that what has been reported is just a tip of an iceberg.

Violence against women takes many forms, from the overt to the subtle. They include sexual, physical, or emotional abuse by an intimate partner; physical or sexual abuse by family members or others; sexual harassment and abuse by authority figures (such as teachers, police officers or employers); trafficking for forced labour or sex; and such traditional practices as forced or child marriages, dowry-related violence; and honour killings, when women are murdered in the name of family honour.

Systematic sexual abuse in conflict situations is another form of violence against women. The most common form of abuse taking place in Zanzibar include wife battering, abandonment and rape. The practice is a major public health problem and a violation of human rights.

Suzuki boosted in sales in India

Suzuki Motors has avoided reporting a loss for the January to March quarter, helped by growth in India, but was downbeat about future sales.

The carmaker made a net profit of 5.8bn yen ($59m; £39m), during its fiscal fourth quarter, down 27% on a year ago.

Suzuki controls about half of the car market in India through its local unit Maruti Suzuki, which has seen sales rise for four months in a row.

The firm now expects global profits to fall 82% in its current financial year.

Suzuki predicts they will decline to 5bn yen due to the global slump in demand for new cars.

It also expects it will be affected by the continuing strong yen, which eats into its overseas earnings.

A Saudi English-language daily newspaper based in Riyadh, reported that Judge said that "if a person gives SR 1,200 [$320] to his wife and she spends 900 riyals [$240] to purchase an abaya [the black cover that women in Saudi Arabia must wear] from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment."

Women in the audience immediately and loudly protested Al-Razine's statement, and were shocked to learn the remarks came from a judge, the newspaper reported.

Al-Razine "also pointed out that women's indecent behavior and use of offensive words against their husbands were some of the reasons for domestic violence in the country," it added.

Domestic violence, which used to be a taboo subject in the conservative kingdom, has become a hot topic in recent years. Groups like the National Family Safety Program have campaigned to educate the public about the problem and help prevent domestic abuse.

Toyota report loss this year

Toyota Motor, the world's largest vehicle manufacturer, has reported a loss of $7.7bn for the first three months of this year, its worst result ever.

The Japanese company's latest fiscal results are a dramatic turnaround after it made a record profit of 2.27 trillion yen last year.

Katsuaki Watanabe, Toyota's president, said the loss was a result of "the significant deterior
ation in vehicle sales particularly in the US and Europe, the rapid appreciation of the yen against the US dollar and the euro and the sharp rise in raw materials".

Kiyohito Watanabe arrested in Japan

A 33-year-old unemployed man was arrested for murder on Wednesday, accused of stabbing his girlfriend in the apartment they shared in Hekinan City.

Midori Kamimoto,30, called her mother just after 3 p.m., saying she thought her live-in partner, Kiyohito Watanabe, was going to kill her.
Kamimoto’s mother rushed to the apartment and found her lying on a bed, bleeding from her abdomen and neck. She called for an ambulance and Kamimoto was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after, dying from severe blood loss.

Police said Kamimoto’s 4-year-old son was in the apartment at the time, but was not injured.

Police tracked down Watanabe later in the day in Kariya City, also of Aichi Prefecture, and arrested him for murder after he admitted to the stabbing. He told police that his girlfriend wanted to end the relationship, and so he killed her and intended to kill himself as well.

The Rev. Alberto Cutie (pronounced koo-tee-AYE) AKA "Father Oprah" remains to be a priest. But he was relieved Tuesday of his duties at St. Francis De Sales Church in Miami Beach, Florida, and at the Radio Paz and Radio Peace networks, said a "deeply saddened" Miami, Florida, Archbishop John C. Favalora.

The photos of the Cuban-American priest appeared on the cover and on eight inside pages of this week's TV Notas magazine. The cover says in Spanish: "Good God. Padre Alberto. First photos of a priest 'in flagrante' with his lover."

Cutie however,apologized in an online statement Tuesday, saying he "wants to ask for forgiveness if my actions have caused pain and sadness. ... I assure you that my service and dedication to God remain intact."

Riyaz Kurji, former Uganda Rally Champion and one of the best known rally drivers in the African Rally Championship series, is dead.

Kurji is said to have succumbed to injuries after his Subaru Impreza rolled several times at the end a high speed accident while leading his home round of the African Rally Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Pearl of Africa Rally was prematurely ended when news of Kurji’s death broke.

Shockwaves were felt throughout the city amid at least three explosions.

The authorities have advised workers around the city to vacate their offices, warning of further blasts.

Officials said the army planned to set off another huge explosion in an effort to contain the smaller blasts.

The armoury next to the army camp, which lies 14km (nine miles) outside the city centre, is thought to have contained large amounts of ordnance, including mines and artillery shells.

Attacks on Christian Families in Iraq

Two attacks on Christian families in the city of Kirkuk on Sunday evening left three people dead and two others wounded.

The first occurred in a neighborhood in southern Kirkuk when a Christian woman and her daughter-in-law were murdered in their home late night Sunday.The attackers slit the women's throats to fulfil their barbaric thoughts.

In another incident in the neighborhood close by, gunmen attacked a Christian family in their home, shooting a father and his three sons, killing one son instantly.

Iraqi Christians have moved out of the areas since October last year.

In October, more than a thousand Iraqi families fled the northern city of Mosul after they were reportedly frightened by a series of killings and threats by Muslim extremists, who apparently ordered them to convert to Islam or face death( this is what their teachings tell them)

At least 14 Christians were killed in Mosul in the first two weeks of October.

Steve Donnelly, the owner of the Supreme Motor Lodge in the town of Palmerston North, said he decided to yank the welcome mat for the 16,000 residents of Wainuiomata because "each time they visited, our life became less exciting."

"I'm not Santa Claus. I can't figure out who's naughty and who's nice," he said. "So we went ahead and banned all of them."

Wainuiomata, near the capital, Wellington, is about two hours' drive from Palmerston North.

Donnelly said he banned the town after three groups of people from Wainuiomata checked in on separate occasions over a six-month period, riling other guests at the 51-room hotel.

"We have moms and dads who come here with two or three kids to relax," he said. "They don't want some loudmouth spitting on the pavement, flirting with girls and swearing."

Diego Murillo, a leader of the AUC Colombian right-wing paramilitary group, has been jailed for 31 years by a New York court for drug trafficking.

The AUC is accused of shipping large quantities of cocaine to the US and is now ordered to pay a $4m (£2.8m) fine.
Murillo told the judge that he had sold drugs to help his fighters and that he was adding he was sorry for harm caused in the US.

But the prosecution said he had led a terrorist organisation and controlled a cocaine-exporting empire.

child porn ring suspects arrested

Seven people, including a Roman Catholic priest, were arrested this week for their alleged involvement in a child pornography ring, the attorney general of Mexico City, Miguel Angel Mancera.

The suspects are accused of distributing more than 100,000 sexually explicit pictures and videos of children from around the world.

Authorities have seized CDs, DVDs and computers from the suspects, he said.

The number of child victims was not disclosed, but Mancera said they were all under the age of 10.

35 rebels killed in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan soldiers have pushed deep into the sole remaining Tamil rebel enclave and killed 35 guerrillas while nearly 78,000 civilians have fled the northern war zone in the past two days, the military said Wednesday.

Troops in recent months have ousted the rebels from all their former strongholds and hemmed them into what the government previously deemed a "no fire" zone to protect civilians. But troops entered the 7.7-square-mile (20-square-kilometer) zone this week to fight remaining rebels and free civilians trapped there.

The military said it broke through a key rebel bunker in the coastal strip on Monday and that tens of thousands of civilians have been fleeing the area since then. As of Tuesday evening, 77,793 civilians had escaped, the military said.

Troops advanced deep into the zone and captured a part of during fighting with insurgents on Monday and Tuesday, killing at least 35 rebels, said Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara, the military spokesman. He did not reveal the extent of the area seized by the troops.

China planning to build more dams on troubled Yangtze

China will build at least 20 more reservoirs or hydroelectric projects in the Yangtze river system by 2020, the government said Tuesday, despite growing concerns over dam construction there.

The figure was contained in comments by a top water resources ministry official on plans for the Yangtze, China's longest river, and its upper reaches that were posted on the ministry's website.

"At least 20 (new) reservoirs will be put into operation by 2020," vice minister Hu Siyi was quoted as saying in a report on the website.

The increase was aimed primarily at further harnessing the hydropower resources of the Yangtze, the report said.

A proliferation of dams in the Yangtze drainage basin has drawn heavy criticism from domestic and overseas experts who have warned of a range of environmental and seismic risks.

Much of the criticism has been centred on the massive Three Gorges Dam project in Hubei province.

Horses die just before polo match

Fourteen thoroughbred horses dropped dead in a mysterious scene Sunday before a polo match near West Palm Beach, Florida.

State and local veterinary teams are trying to figure out what happened at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida, as team Lechuza Caracas prepared to compete in a U.S. Open match.

Two horses initially collapsed, and as vets and team officials scrambled to revive them, five others became dizzy, said Tim O'Connor, spokesman for the polo club.

"A total of seven died on our property," O'Connor told CNN. Seven other horses died en route to a Wellington horse farm and a veterinary hospital.

The cause of the deaths has not been determined, and necropsies and blood tests were underway.

Condoms 'too big' for Indian men

A survey of more than 1,000 men in India has concluded that condoms made according to international sizes are too large for a majority of Indian men.

The study found that more than half of the men measured had penises that were shorter than international standards for condoms.

A man is holding a number of hostages on board a plane in the Jamaican resort of Montego Bay, reports say.

The man reportedly breached security systems using fake ID and boarded the plane as it was preparing to take off at around 2230 local time (0430 GMT).

There are unconfirmed reports that a shot has been fired on board the Canada-bound charter plane. The gunman is said to have robbed passengers.

Police and security services have cordoned off the airport.

Two moderate earthquakes have hit eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 19 people and destroying more than 150 homes.

A singer from the German girl band No Angels has been arrested on suspicion of infecting a partner with HIV, a prosecutor's office has said.

Nadja Benaissa is suspected of having unprotected sex with three men without informing them she was HIV-positive, German media reported.

The 26-year-old singer was arrested on Saturday in Frankfurt before she was due to perform in a solo concert.

She reportedly faces a possible charge of grievous bodily harm.

The prosecutor's office in the western town of Darmstadt said Ms Benaissa had been detained because of the "urgent suspicion" that she slept with three people between 2004 and 2006, without telling them she was HIV-positive.

At least one of the partners then tested positive for HIV, allegedly as a result of having intercourse with her, the office said in a statement.

No Angels formed in 2000 on the international TV show Popstars before recording a series of hits and emerging as Germany's most successful girl band.

The band's manager declined to comment on the case, Spiegel Online reported.

Police are said to be investigating the Development Entrepreneurship for Community Initiative (Deci) for operating an illegal funds management scheme.

This comes as the central bank issued a statement on Wednesday warning the public not to invest their money in the company.

Enthusiastic investors kept thronging the company's Mabibo offices in Dar es Salaam this week to deposit their money despite warnings the scheme was illegal and risky.

Deci, run by the Jesus Christ Deliverance Church, is understood to be promising investors 300 per cent interests within a period of between three and 12 months.

Local bankers have said the company is running an illegal pyramid scheme and cautioned depositors against risky investments.

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) and Capital Market and Securities Authority (CMSA) issued a joint statement Wednesday evening saying the scheme was illegal.

Obama's aunt gets reprieve in asylum case

A federal immigration judge says President Obama's aunt, who has stayed in the United States illegally for years, will be allowed to remain in the country until at least next year.

Judge Leonard Shapiro said Wednesday he would hear Zeituni Onyango's political asylum case on February 4, 2010.

Onyango, who is the half sister of the president's late father, applied for political asylum in 2002 due to violence in her native Kenya, according to her spokesman, Mike Rogers. Onyango was a legal resident of the United States at the time and had received a Social Security card a year earlier.

Onyango's asylum request was turned down in 2004, and she has been living in the U.S. illegally since then, after twice appealing and twice being ordered to leave.

Wednesday's hearing at the U.S. Immigration Court in Boston was closed to the media at the request of Margaret Wong, Onyango's attorney. Lawyers for the Department of Homeland Security are defending an order to deport Onyango.

White House spokesman Ben LaBolt says President Obama is staying out of the matter and that "the president believes that the case should run its ordinary course."

When the initial appearance was over, Onyango, wearing a red wig and dark glasses, was escorted through a side door of the courthouse to avoid news cameras staking out the main entrances.

Onyango lives in public housing in South Boston and volunteers as a health advocate for people in her housing complex. She reportedly attended inauguration events for her nephew in January accompanied by her lawyer.

N.Korea warns Japan

North Korea says it will attack the Japanese military and "major targets," if Japan shoots down a rocket Pyongyang plans to launch in the coming days, North Korea's state-run news service, KCNA, reported Thursday.

Japan recently mobilized its missile defense system in response to the planned North Korean launch, Japanese officials said. The move, noteworthy for a country with a pacifist constitution, is aimed at shooting down any debris from the launch that might fall into Japanese territory.

U.S. Navy ships capable of shooting down ballistic missiles have also been moved to the Sea of Japan, a Navy spokesman said.

The threat of retaliation comes as North Korea has begun fueling its long-range rocket, according to a senior U.S. military official familiar with the latest U.S. intelligence on the matter.

The fueling signals that the country could be in the final stages of what North Korea has said will be the launch of a satellite into space as early as this weekend, the senior U.S. military official said Wednesday.

Fedex cargo plane McDonnell Douglas MD-11, burst into flames while landing at Tokyo's Narita airport in Japan today 23/03/09.

The plane took off from Guanngzou, China and bounced twice on the runway before it turned on its side and bursting into flames.
Both Pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash.

Liverpool's Gerrard sent to trial

A Liverpool court dropped an assault charge against English football star Steven Gerrard for a nightclub brawl in December but ordered him to appear at trial next month, a court spokeswoman said Friday.

Collision of US Navy vessels near Iranian Waters

Britain ready to talk to Hezbollah

The British government has said it is open to talks with the political wing of Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shia Muslim organisation.

Bill Rammell, Britain's foreign office minister, told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday: "We have reconsidered the position ... in light of more positive developments within Lebanon ... and for that reason we have explored establishing contacts."

Britain has had no formal contact with Hezbollah since 2005, and last July it added the group's military wing to its list of banned organisations.

Hezbollah became part of a Lebanese national unity government last year after months of wrangling with their opponents in the March 14 political bloc.

Tiny moon orbiting saturn

International Scientist announced the discovery of tiny moon orbiting saturn.

The speck of light, captured by cameras on board the Cassini spacecraft, was first observed on August 15. A review found the moonlet on two earlier images and it has since been seen on multiple occasions.

The finding appeared in Tuesday's edition of the International Astronomical Union circular.

The moon is about one-third of a mile (a half-kilometer) across and circles Saturn as a part of the planet's sixth, or G, ring.

"Before Cassini, the G ring was the only dusty ring that was not clearly associated with a known moon, which made it odd," said Matthew Hedman, a Cassini imaging team associate at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. "The discovery of this moonlet, together with other Cassini data, should help us make sense of this previously mysterious ring."

Early next year, Cassini's camera will take a closer look at the moonlet. The Cassini Equinox mission, an extension of the original four-year mission, is expected to continue until fall 2010. If the craft continues to function properly, the mission could be extended up to two more years.

Cassini, which was funded by NASA and the European and Italian space agencies, launched in 1997 and took seven years to make the 934 million-mile (1.5 billion-kilometer) trip to Saturn.

Since its arrival, Cassini has been making a looping voyage through the Saturn system and is returning loads of data on the ringed planet and its moons.

Three years ago, a space probe launched from Cassini found evidence of geysers erupting from underground pools of liquid water on Saturn's moon Enceladus. High-definition pictures beamed back from the probe showed huge plumes of ice coming from the moon's south pole.

The chief of staff of Guinea-Bissau's armed forces has been killed in an attack on the military's headquarters in the capital Bissau, reports say.

General Batista Tagme Na Wai reportedly died after a blast late on Sunday that destroyed part of the building.

At least five people were hurt in the attack, which one report described as a grenade strike and another as a bomb.

Guinea-Bissau, in western Africa, is one of the world's poorest states, and has a history of coups.

An aide to the general, Lt Col Bwam Nhamtchio, told the AFP news agency the chief of staff was in his office when the blast went off.

"He was gravely wounded and did not survive his injuries. This is a loss for all of us," Lt Col Nhamtchio said.

Following the attack on the military HQ, officers ordered two private radio stations in the city to cease broadcasting.

"For the security of the journalists, you must close the radio station and stop broadcasting. It's for your own safety," armed forces spokesman Samuel Fernandes told reporters at one station.

On Monday, Donald Crabtree opened Grand View Topless Coffee Shop in Vassalboro, Maine, where the waiters and waitresses serve their customers topless.

In a town with fewer than 4,500 residents, the topless coffee shop is booming with business. Paul Crabtree, the owner's brother, describes business so far as "fantastic."

"It's just been crowds mobbing in," he said.

PhD scams at Mzumbe University

Eight senior lecturers with the Mzumbe University have doctorate degrees that are either fake or acquired from institutions that lack internationally accepted accreditation, the Tanzania Commission of Universities (TCU) said today.

TCU Executive Secretary, Prof Mayunga Nkunya, said in an interview that it was recently established that some dons at the Morogoro-based varsity held questionable degrees. He said verification of the degrees was carried out after widespread public complaints on the authenticity of the degrees.

The matter was also repeatedly raised in the National Assembly. Prof Nkunya said TCU has already communicated its findings to the government for further action. He cautioned the public to be careful with some foreign institutions and individuals who were of late increasingly peddling undergraduate and graduate around the world.

Turkish airliner crash at Amsterdam

A Turkish airliner crashed at Amsterdam's main airport about 10:40 a.m today Amsterdam Time.

Part of what was a Turkish Airliner.

The Boeing 737-800, which originated from Istanbul, Turkey, was trying to land at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol when it went down with 137 people on board.

Emergency services helping evacuate the plane.
